Started in 1970 by Jay Kasmark, D-Mark, Inc. makes a  non-sexy line of products made from granular activated carbon, or GAC. These commercial grade odor and gasious pollutant removal filers are used in a wide variety of applications. Up to 400 different organic and inorganic compounds in fact.

We are all familiar with small companies that grew and then were purchased or absorbed into a larger corporation and became just another victim to Corporate growth and acquisition. D-Mark is not one of them.

For many people living in the Northern states Winter will soon be here and with it comes cold temperatures and the opportunity to light up the fire place that has been sitting idle for most of the year.

We Are Carbon

Roughly 96 percent of the mass of the human body is made up of just four elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, with a lot of that in the form of water. The remaining 4 percent is a sparse sampling of the periodic table of elements.Apr 16, 2009

It would be impossible for life on earth to exist without carbon. Carbon is the main component of sugars, proteins, fats, DNA, muscle tissue, pretty much everything in your body. The reason carbon is so special is down to the electron configuration of the individual atoms. Electrons exist in concentric ‘shells’ around the central nucleus and carbon has four electrons in its outermost shell. As the most stable thing for an atom to have is eight electrons, this means that each carbon can form four bonds with surrounding atoms.

As well as being the only element in organic matter, Carbon atoms are the only element in both graphite and diamond. This is one reason scientists are concerned about things like the ozone layer. Ozone attacks carbon which makes it very dangerous for us humans.

Carbon Face Mask

Recently, I noticed that some of the companies in the Make-Up industry have been selling charcoal or carbon material that is applied to your face like a paste designed to pull dirt and other materials from your skin.  They call it a Carbon Face Mask.

Carbon based compounds for application to the body have been around for a number of years. Back in the 50’s you could be a material called Black Salve that would pull a sliver out from under your skin when left on over night. It had the ability to pull stingers from Bees from your skin as well as other materials.

Carbon materials like granular activated Carbon used by companies such as D-Mark, Inc. based in Michigan, are commonly used to remove molecules of airborne gaseous pollutants, from both organic and inorganic sources.  Carbon has a very high surface area and is one of the best known substances for the purposes of removal of a wide variety of contaminants.

I have spoken with some women that have tried the Carbon Face Mask and they tell me it feels like someone is pulling on their skin. This is, in fact, somewhat true as the moisture in the carbon dries out it clinks to the surface of your face and like the Black Salve mentioned earlier, it will draw moisture and anything in the pores of your skin to the surface.

Blended Media For Odor Control

For many issues where the control or odors or gaseous pollutants is required, carbon is the most often used material for reduction and/or removal of those gases. However, there are a number of inorganic materials that are very difficult to remove using just carbon alone. For these types of gaseous pollutants additional blended media for odor control compounds are added to help the carbon more readily adsorb the gaseous molecules.

One of those materials that is used as a helper is Activated Alumina impregnated with 5% Potassium Permanganate.  Unlike carbon, Alumina is a catalyst that will, in effect, alter the molecular make up of the gaseous pollutant so that the carbon can more easily adsorb the gas.

Ring Panel Filters With Carbon

Ring panel filters have been around for over 25 years. Most of them are used in the commercial and industrial markets.  The advantages of using these dual-layer Ring Panel filters  is their dirt holding capacity with lower increase in pressure drop over time than standard single layer filters. And the fact that  these filters have pocket space in between the layers to put materials such as granular activated carbon.

D-Mark, Inc. has been making Ring Panel filters for years. Opening their doors in 1970, D-Mark has become one of the major suppliers of carbon filters and adsorptive media in the North American Continent.

Ring Panel filters have a higher air flow resistance than most of the low end, general duty air filters normally placed in residential HVAC units. However, they fit much tighter into the filter frame and are much more effective at removing more of the smaller, sub-micron airborne particles than the standard duty filters.

D-Mark has added some carbon media to the inside of the dual layer Ring Panel filters thus providing not only a better solution to removal of airborne contaminants but also reducing the odors and gaseous pollutants in the living environment.

As mentioned earlier, dual layer Ring Panel filters have a slightly higher resistance to air flow which, over time, will reduce the amount of air going through your air handler as the static pressure increases across the face of the filter. 3D Printing and Odor Pollution

Air Cleaner Filters

Working with 3D Printers for the past 5 years has provided me with a lot of personal data on the issues of odor or gaseous pollutants that may be emitted when printing certain types of materials.  Certainly one of the major contributors to strong odors when used in the 3D Printer is ABS.

ABS has a petroleum base and while it has some unique material characteristics it also crates a significant odor when printing. At 240 degrees C or close to 520 degrees F, this material can both release sub-micron particles and some significant gaseous pollutants during the printing operation.

In 1970, D-Mark Inc. was formed to provide carbon based media to remove or reduce gaseous pollutants. Today, D-Mark is one of the largest producers of granular activated carbon products in the U.S.

Acrylonitrile butatiene styrene ( ABS ) is a well know plastic material used in many household products.  Styrene is compound that can be somewhat challenging when inhaled or if exposed to for periods of time. The carbon media offered by D-Mark can significantly remove and/or reduce the ppm levels of the ABS gases and does it very effectively.

These carbon filters are included in the new LiteWorld Protective Enclosures ( that are specifically designed to be used to enclose large bed 3D Printers. As more new materials are developed for use in the FDM or FFF style 3D printers the issues of odors and particulate control will continued to be a point of discussion.

Odors Without Borders

Sitting outside at a favorite restaurant you notice all the odors coming from the inside of the restaurant evoking the coming of your favorite dish. A couple sits down four tables away and the man is smoking a cigar. From over 25 feet you can smell the pungent odor from what seems to be a very expensive stogie.

Odors are carried very quickly from one area to another along air currents and wind. Even though you may  be outside you can always recognize the presence of cigarette smoke even if you are driving and passing a car with their widows open, with  smoke coming out of their open window.  Our sense of smell is one of the most highly evolved of all our senses.

When carbon is heated under high temperatures it will expand its surface area which has a high retention for gaseous molecules making this material when used in a filtration style device, extremely useful in reducing and/or removing gaseous pollutants, both organic and inorganic.

Over the years various types of technologies have been introduced to attempt to remove gaseous molecules without using a media based filter like carbon. One of the more common products is the Ozone Generator. These devices produce Ozone, O3 ( which is a strong oxidizer ) and easily give up one of their Oxygen elements when coming in contact with any surface or other gaseous molecule.  The Ozone does not remove or eliminate the gaseous pollutant it just changes the make up of the molecule which could be good or bad depending upon the gas. Also, since Ozone attacks carbon and humans are basically carbon based, it is extremely harmful to the population as a whole.
